Sainte Marie Among the Hurons (1639-1649)
Sainte Marie among the Hurons was the 17th century headquarters for the French Jesuit mission to the Huron. A nationally significant historic site, Sainte-Marie now stands recreated on its original location where the compelling story is again, brought to life. This makes for a great family outing with visual shows, children's activities, and 25 reconstructed buildings on site.
Discovery Harbour (1817- 1856)
Discovery Harbour is a picturesque historic site situated on beautiful Penetanguishene Bay, tracing its roots back to the original 19th-century British Naval and Military base. Guided tours are offered of the historic properties. Phone: 705-549-8064.
Wye Marsh Wildlife Centre
One of Ontario's, most unique marshlands is home to over 200 species of birds native to the Muskoka Georgian Bay area including the common loon and the giant blue heron. Guests see the marsh come alive as they wander across boardwalks and trails throughout the marshlands, or by boarding giant freighter canoes for a guided, interpretive experience. The Wye Marsh is also home for the re-introduction program of the Trumpeter Swan, the largest of North America's waterfowl.
Constructed in the early part of this century, this magnificent Catholic shrine sits high atop a hill and commands a breathtaking view of Georgian Bay. The shrine was built to honor the Jesuits massacred nearby Sainte Marie. It has seen pilgrimages from all over the world and a visit from Pope John Paul II.
Johnston's Cranberry Marsh
Muskoka is home to the only two producing commercial cranberry farms in the province. Johnston's Marsh is family owned and visitors are welcomed to the farm and winery all year round. Over the last 18 years, Bala has gained recognition as "The Cranberry Capital of Ontario". Take a self guided tour around the Old Marsh Trail or check out their "Get Wild" program for the kids. Enjoy the annual Cranberry Festival the weekend after Thanksgiving.
Big Chute Marine Railway
Just a 10 minute drive or 15 minute boat ride from Logpointe, this unique site has a large carriage which transports boats a height of 48 feet to the Upper Severn River. It is one of 45 sites along the Trent-Severn Waterway where boats are taken from one water level to another. The Big Chute Marine Railway is the only one in the world!
